The Church's long musical tradition began in 1836, when Samuel Sebastian Wesley chose its first organist. His selected candidate, Mr.William Litton Viner, has come down in history as the composer of the famous tune to "Lord behold us with thy blessing" (English Hymnal 523)
The original organ was destroyed in the fire of 1985. The upper casing of the present organ and pipes (part dating from 1675 and by the renowned Father Smith) came from the University Church at Oxford. The new action and console were by Lance Foy of Truro.
Music in Worship varies from ancient to modern in style and from organ music to that supported by a wide variety of instrumentalists. In addition to the main organ the Church has a chamber organ, two grand pianos and a harpsichord for use in worship.
